Live Video Monitoring vs Security Guards: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Both can protect a property. They work differently, cost differently and suit different sites. Here is how to choose.

When a business needs after-hours protection, the choice is often between guards on site and cameras watched by trained operators. Each has strengths. The right answer depends on your site, your risks and your budget.

Live monitoring covers a site continuously from a central location.

How each option works

Security guards are physically present: they patrol, check doors, challenge visitors and respond in person. Live video monitoring places cameras across the property and has trained operators watch them from a monitoring centre. They verify events, speak to intruders through on-site speakers (voice-down) and notify your contacts or emergency responders.

Coverage and consistency

A guard covers one place at a time and has breaks, shift changes and blind spots. Monitoring covers every camera continuously, including nights, weekends and holidays, and one operator can supervise many views at once. Cameras also record everything, giving you evidence for police and insurers.

Cost structure

Guard coverage is staffed time: the cost scales with every hour covered. Monitoring is mostly equipment plus a service fee, so for most sites it is considerably less expensive to cover the same hours. Guards can still make sense for events, high-traffic public areas or when physical presence is required.

Response and deterrence

A visible guard is a strong deterrent, but only where they are standing. Voice-down warnings reach people anywhere on the camera network, and a person hearing that they are being watched and that responders are being called will usually leave. For serious incidents, an operator can notify the police or your contacts immediately.

When combining both makes sense

  • Large sites with high-value assets where a guard handles access and monitoring covers the rest.
  • Events where guards manage crowds and cameras cover perimeters.
  • Construction sites where monitoring covers nights and guards are used only for specific tasks.

How to decide

  • List what you need to protect and when it is unattended.
  • Compare the cost of covering those hours with each option.
  • Check whether you already own cameras that could be monitored.
  • Ask how incidents are verified and who is called.

Frequently asked questions

Is live video monitoring cheaper than guards?

For most sites it covers the same hours at a lower ongoing cost, because one operator can watch many cameras at once. We quote it based on your site.

Can operators actually stop a break-in?

Voice-down warnings often end incidents before damage or theft occurs, and operators notify responders when needed.

Do I still need cameras if I have guards?

Cameras give guards a view of the whole site and provide recorded evidence, so the two work well together.
