How Many Security Cameras Does a Business Need?

There is no magic number. The right count depends on what you need to see, not the size of the building alone.

The number of cameras a business needs depends on the layout of the property, the risks you face and what you want footage to show. A small shop may need four cameras, while a warehouse yard may need many more, or fewer if PTZ cameras cover large areas. Here is how to plan it properly.

Plan camera placement around risk areas, not just square footage.

Start with risk areas, not square footage

  • Entrances and exits: every public and staff door, including loading doors.
  • Cash handling: tills, service counters, safes and offices.
  • High-value areas: stock rooms, server rooms and equipment storage.
  • Perimeter and yards: fences, gates, parking lots and laydown areas.

Decide what each camera must show

Planning cameras by purpose gives better results than spacing them evenly. Some views need to detect movement across a wide area. Others need to identify a face or licence plate at a gate, which requires a closer, higher-resolution view and good lighting.

Match camera types to the job

  • Dome cameras: discreet, vandal-resistant coverage for interiors and entries.
  • Bullet cameras: long-range exterior coverage with a visible deterrent.
  • PTZ cameras: pan, tilt and zoom for large yards and lots.
  • Licence-plate capture: purpose-built cameras for gates and driveways.

Lighting, mounting and storage

Poor lighting and awkward mounting reduce the value of even good cameras. Plan for night visibility, glare and weather, and make sure recording and storage settings keep the footage you need for as long as you need it.

Add monitoring so cameras prevent, not just record

Cameras that only record tell you what happened. Adding live video monitoring puts trained operators on your cameras so incidents can be stopped as they happen.

Frequently asked questions

How many cameras does a small business need?

It depends on the layout, but entrances, cash areas and key stock areas are the usual starting points. A site review gives you a precise number.

Is more always better?

Not necessarily. Well-placed cameras with the right field of view and lighting often outperform a larger number of poorly placed ones.

Can I add cameras later?

Yes. Systems can be designed to grow as your needs change.
